Pic of the Day – Wall Art

A striking image at an entrance to an underground cafe. There sure are some talented artists around.

Things have been a bit slow around here for the past year, hopefully now that society is getting back to normal, I can find more time to get active with the camera.

Pic of the Day – Lone Tree

While camping at Norval Park campground I took the opportunity to get up early and have a go at some early sunrise photography.

The weather was not particularly co-operative with heavy clouds and rain forecast. The clouds did break at dawn with some nice colors to come through.

This tree, or what was left of it was about the only item of significance on this beach, I thought it would match well with the moody heavy clouds.

Pic of the Day – On the beach

This trip was a long time coming.

Towards the end of our holiday, we met up with some friends, so we can go in a group to the beach, you know, safety in numbers, especially since we had never done beach/sand driving before. Byfield National Park was the place we stayed at for a few days, so we just had a short drive to the beach along some sandy tracks.

As the Ranger suggested drop Tyre pressures down to about 14psi, low range, manual third gear and just keep on going. Our new Nissan Patrol did not disappoint, handling the sand with ease. Not once did we think we would get stuck.

It was a good day out with the experience wanting use to do it again soon.

Pic of the Day – Red-bowed finch

It has taken me awhile to have a good opportunity to get a clear shot of this bird. A common bird but in my experience an elusive one when it comes to photography. Plenty of times I have seen them around, but never able to get a good shot.

Taken a Oxley Common Creek, and added to my bird gallery.

The red-browed finch (Neochmia temporalis) is an estrildid finch that inhabits the east coast of Australia. This species has also been introduced to French Polynesia. It is commonly found in temperate forest and dry savannah habitats. It may also be found in dry forest and mangrove habitats in tropical region.

Fujifilm film simulations is one of the features that attracted me to the camera system last year.

Pic of the Day – Mango Man

Had a short holiday to Townsville over the weekend.

One of the things that drew me to the Fujifilm camera system is the film simulations you can get straight out of the camera.

This is a JPG straight out of the camera, just with some minor adjustments and a small crop. The film simulation is called Rockwell (velvia).

The settings are below, I have changed the color to +2, I found the recommended setting a bit too much.

    Velvia
    Dynamic Range: DR200
    Highlight: -1
    Shadow: -1
    Color: +4 (changed to +2)
    Noise Reduction: -4
    Sharpening: +4
    Clarity: +5
    Grain Effect: Weak, Small
    Color Chrome Effect: Strong
    Color Chrome Effect Blue: Strong
White Balance: Auto, +1 Red & -1 Blue
ISO: Auto, up to ISO 6400
Exposure Compensation: +1/3 to +2/3 (typically)

  • Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS Control

    Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS Control

I have just got this camera and had to do a search on the internet to find out how to turn the IBIS (IN Body Image Stabilization) of and on.

In the menu system for photography on the camera, there is not a specific entry for IBIS. In the manual IBIS is nowhere to be seen for photography, for video it is mentioned.

Instead it is called IS mode, which is the same as the X-T3 which of course does not have IBIS. This is where the confusion lies. Looking at the X-T3 and 4 manuals, the wording is identical except for the note content at the bottom.

Below is a simple explanation of how it works.

The IS mode is in menu Shooting page 2 on the camera

    IS MODE Options

    There 3 options –

    1. Continuous
    2. Shooting Only
    3. Off

Option 3 will not be in the menu if the lens has an OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) switch. The lens OIS switch will switch both lens and IBIS off together. It’s either both on or both off. The OIS switch has priority over the camera menu selection.

Option 3 will be there if the lens has no OIS switch so IBIS can be turned off in camera.

For me, I set my camera to option 2, to save battery, as I walk around with my camera switched on, no point having IBIS working when I am not taking a picture. On a tripod it will be off. To make this an easy option to get to IS mode is in MY MENU.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Anthony Morganti has presented an unbiased example of developing a Fujifilm raw file using both of the 2 most popular editors available today and demonstrates the shortcoming of each.

Capture One Update Coming In May

Since changing to Fujifilm I have also changed raw editor to Capture One, where I felt cloning and healing is behind Lightroom in usability and results.

The upcoming release due this month which is free to all current users of Capture One seems to greatly improve the usability and results of using these tools.

Below is a link to the video explaining how it will work.

    Christmas Eve – Brisbane

Still continuing with my experiment with Fujifilm X-T3.

This is the first urban evening shoot with this camera and I was pleased with the result. I have also been experimenting with film simulations, so as a record for myself and also for anyone interested I thought I would post some pics with the recipe.

This is based on the Astia film simulation.

    Astia – Urban

    • Dynamic Range = 100
    • D Range Priority = Off
    • Fil Simulation = Astia/Soft
    • Grain Effect = off
    • Color Chrome Effect = Weak
    • White Balance Custom = R +1
    • Highlight Tone = -2
    • Shadow Tone = -2
    • Color = +2
    • Sharpness = +3
    • Noise Reduction = -3

A great camera to walk atound with, and for jpg straight out of the camera a great result.

I have the camera setup to shoot REW + JPG, the film simulations only work on the jpg, I keep te raw for a just in case I want a different look.

It’s now been 2 months with this camera and I have made the decision to sell off my Canon gear. Since I am not a high end proffesional shooter, this camera does a very good job at a moderate price, and is a bit smaller and lighter to carry around.

I will keep playing around with these film simulations as I think if you can get one that you like it will save having to do post processing alot of the time.

    Untill next time.
