July turned out to be an okay month financially, even though it started off a little rocky. Getting the car back from the workshop after our breakdown was a big relief.
We had originally planned to visit Darwin and a few places along the way. However, after the start date for our volunteering position in Carnarvon was brought forward, we decided to change our plans and head straight back.
What Happened
- Car repairs – These expenses were related to our breakdown near El Questro and the replacement of the failed fuel pump. In the end, it appears the breakdown was simply bad luck. We also needed to buy a new battery for the car.
- Fuel – We had to return to Carnarvon for the volunteering position we had accepted, so we covered a lot of ground this month, approximately 2,400 km.
- Caravan Parks – Most of our accommodation in Kununurra was covered by RACQ Roadside Assistance following the breakdown. On the journey back to Carnarvon, we did plenty of free camping and only paid for a few nights of accommodation, which was a welcome bonus.

Summary
July helped bring down our average monthly travel costs. The breakdown slowed us down and took some of the wind out of our sails, but once the car was repaired, we were relieved to be moving again.
Changing our plans and traveling directly back to Carnarvon meant covering a lot of kilometers in a relatively short time. Fortunately, the roadside-assistance accommodation and the amount of free camping we did helped keep the overall cost of the month under control.
